Born in Surf explores the origins and evolution of the Bonin Island surfing community. Told from the perspective of 7 surfers from 7 generations, each local’s story reveals a part of the surfing history and a piece of island culture. Collectively their stories show how surfing has functioned as a communication tool with the power to unify a community and realize a lifestyle for island people. The movie was filmed over the course of one year, from summer 2014 to summer 2015, and explores the different seasons and waves of Chichijima, the main inhabited island of the Ogasawara Archipelago. As Ogasawara has no airport and can only be reached by a 25 hour ferry ride, the surf points found in this pristine environment are arguably some of the most remote surfing locations in the world.

Born in Surfは小笠原諸島（別名ボニン・アイランズ）のサーフィンコミュニティーの原点と発展を探るドキュメンタリー映画である。この作品は世代の異なる7人のローカルサーファーの経験と視点から語られ、島の文化とサーフィンの歴史を紹介する。彼らの話を通して、如何にサーフィンが島のコミュニケーション手段として成り立ち、島民達のライフスタイルを確立させると共にコミュニティーを結束させる力を持っているかが伺える。この作品は2014年の夏から一年を通して撮影され、小笠原諸島で人が住む最大の島である父島に訪れる各季節の波を捉えている。小笠原諸島には空路が無く、船で25時間をかけなければ辿り着くことはできない。この映画に登場する場所は地球で最も遠くに存在するサーフスポットの一つと言えるだろう。

The documentary was directed and filmed by Matthew Clem(myself) and Nami Miyagawa.  I grew up in Sterling, Virginia, U.S.A., about 40 minutes from Washington D.C. After graduating college I came to Chichijima with the JET (Japanese Exchange and Teaching) Program in the summer of 2011. At the time I had no knowledge of the place and could not speak any Japanese. I was amazed by how the people here invited me in and took care of me.  Surfing became one of my major interests on the island and my fascination with sport became a way for me to express my love for this island and its people, through a movie, Born in Surf.  This island was born out of the ocean and the people here have found their identity in the ocean and in surfing.  Personally, I felt that a new version of myself was born here with the influence of a new culture, language, family and friends.  As I experienced all of the joys and challenges of a new life I felt that surfing gradually became a stronger force in my life. It began to shape my experience, my character, and got me out of bed before sunrise.  This passion and excitement kept growing and growing and I was able to share it with the person who taught me how to surf and showed me so much, Nami.

Born in Surfは僕、Matthew Clem、と宮川南美によって撮影・制作されたドキュメンタリー映画である。僕はアメリカのワシントンD.C.から車で40分ほどの距離にあるバージニア州のスターリングで生まれ育った。大学卒業後はJETプログラム（Japan Exchange and Teaching Program）に参加し、それがきっかけで日本の高校の英語教師として2011年の夏に父島に配属された。その時は小笠原諸島についての知識は全く無く、日本語も話せなかった。それでも僕を温かく迎え、受け入れてくれた島民の優しさに心が動かされた。そのうちサーフィンにハマり、島で最大の楽しみとなった。サーフィンへの興味が高まるとともに島と島の人々に対する愛情も強くなり、それを表現する意味も込めて、Born in Surfを制作することを決意した。小笠原諸島の島々は太平洋の真ん中で生まれ、そこに住む人々は海とサーフィンの中に自分達の独自性を見つけた。自分自身、ここで受けた新しい文化、言語、家族、そして友人達の影響によって新たな発見を見出すことができた。新しい人生に挑戦することに喜びを憶えながらサーフィンは自分の生活の中でさらに大切なものとなっていった。僕の経験や人格を形成する基となり、朝日が昇る前に出かけるのが当たり前になった。そして僕はこの情熱と喜びを自分にサーフィンを教えてくれ、様々なものを見せてくれた南美と共有することができた。

The second daughter of Nori Miyagawa, Nami was born and raised in Chichijima. She works in the field to protect the forests, mountains, and the native species. Her intimate connection with nature is apparent to all who know her.  The original idea for the movie came from Nami’s aspiration to learn more about her father’s experience with surfing, as well as a desire to leave some document of his story.  The idea expanded and we began to film ourselves and others surfing.  We quickly realized how fun and instructive it was to watch ourselves on video, and kept taking turns filming even though we both wanted to surf.  We invested in cameras and lenses and kept filming waves, but by far the most rewarding experience was interviewing the local surfers.  After each interview we walked away feeling inspired and excited to learn more about the ocean and the island, and more importantly to continue searching and pushing ourselves.  The message we composed in Born in Surf is a culmination of all that we found on this little island; love, magic, and of course the joy of riding waves.

南美は宮川典継の次女で、父島で生まれ育ったローカルだ。彼女は小笠原の山や森、そして固有種を守る仕事に就いていて、自然に対して特別な感覚を持ち合わせている。Born in Surfのアイディアは元々彼女が自分の父の経験やサーフィンについて知り、ドキュメンタリーを作りたいという気持ちから生まれた。想像が膨らみ、まずはお互いの波乗りを撮ることから始まった。そこで自分達の波に乗る映像を撮ることの楽しさと、それを見ることによって発見できる自分達のサーフィン技術の改善方法に気づいた。カメラやレンズにお金を費やし、波を撮り続けたが、最も貴重な経験はインタビューしたサーファー達の話を聞けたことだった。インタビューを終える度に新たな刺激を受け、海と島についてもっと知ることが楽しくてしょうがなかった。さらにそれは自分達自身のサーフィンスキルを高める情熱の源ともなったのだ。Born in Surfに込められたメッセージは僕達がこの島で見つけた様々なもの集大成である。それは愛、神秘、そして波に乗る喜びだ。

 

最初の上映会は2015年の8月、小港園地で開かれた。満月の光の下に100人ほどの友人達が集まってくれて、かなり緊張した。でも終わってみたら最高の夜だった！来てれたみんなと、手伝ってくれた人達に感謝。（映像のカットバックはデイヴ・ラスタ、残念ながらこの映画には登場していない）
