Here are brief biographies of each of the 7 surfers who tell our story.

Masashi (Champ) Kawagoe

Born in Kamakura, Japan, Champ’s first exposure to surfing as an elementary school student went hand in hand with surfing’s introduction to Japan. Boards ridden by the servicemen living on the American military base inspired Champ and his friends to build surfboards in junior high school. As the sport grew, surfboard prices became more reasonable and Champ kept surfing, going on to win the Inamura Classic Invitational Contest, hence the name Champ. His desire to live and surf on a warm southern island led him to find Chichijima. He made the journey at a time when the island had just recently been returned to Japanese control and was still inhabited mainly by the English speaking descendants of the original settlers. Known as “Obekei,” these people came from various places in Europe, North America, Hawaii and Japan. Forced to evacuate during the events of WWII, they were allowed to return when peace resumed.  

Upon Champ’s arrival to Chichijima he was informed that there was already a surfer in Ogasawara. Champ sought out Nori Miyagawa and a lifelong surfing friendship was born. Champ is now known as a surfing legend of the island and is the owner and chef of Radford Restaurant.  His daughter bodyboards and his son is a talented surfer, often appearing in the movie.

川越（チャンプ）将司

鎌倉に生まれたチャンプは小学生の時に初めてサーフィンと出会った。ちょうどサーフィン文化が日本に紹介された時期でもあり、中学時代には友人達と共に米軍基地の軍人達が使用していたボードを参考にしながら自分達の板を作ったという。サーフィン文化が広まる中、チャンプも自分のサーフィンを磨き続け、二十歳の時に稲村クラシックで優勝を果たした。チャンプという愛称はそこからきた。その後、気候が暖かい南の島で波乗りを続けながら暮らしたいという気持ちが彼を父島へと誘った。辿り着いた時代はまだ小笠原諸島が返還されて間もない頃で、島に住んでいた人達のほとんどが英語を喋る欧米系の旧島民であった。彼らは小笠原諸島を最初に発見した開拓者達に子孫である。欧米やハワイ、そして日本の血を引く彼らは大戦中に強制疎開させられ、終戦後に帰島が許された。

チャンプが父島に着いた時、すでにサーファーが島にいることを聞かされる。それが彼と宮川典継の出会いであり、そこから彼らのサーフィンを通しての絆が生まれた。現在、チャンプは島のサーフィンレジェンドとして知られ、Radfordレストランのオーナー兼シェフである。彼の娘はボディーボードを楽しみ、息子は才能溢れるサーファーである。映画の中では彼の波乗りが度々見れる。

Johnson Kimura

Born and raised in Chichijima, Johnson provides charming insights about the very beginnings of surfing in the Bonin Islands as well as invaluable knowledge from his lifelong experience of diving and exploring the entire archipelago.  A descendant of the original settlers of the Bonin Islands, he began surfing with his friends on handmade bodyboards at the age of eight or ten. Surfboards from Guam found their way to the Chichijima and were welcomed by Johnson and friends in place of their heavy homemade boards. Johnson spent many years working with the Ogasawara Fisheries Center and now operates two farms.  Johnson’s stories from a life spent among the ocean, the mountains, and the people here are an inspiration to search ourselves and this environment more deeply.

木村ジョンソン

最初に小笠原に移住した欧米系島民の子孫であるジョンソンは、小笠原における初期のサーフィン文化に関する興味深い逸話や島の自然の移り変わりについて深い知識を持つ。幼い頃は友人達と手作りの板を作り、それでサーフィンを始めた。そのうちグアムからサーフボードが父島に渡り、そこからさらにサーフィンを楽しむようになった。長らく小笠原の水産センターに勤めていたジョンソンは現在二つの農園を営む。初期の小笠原の海、山、そして人々を知るジョンソンの経験と話は非常に感銘深いものがある。

Noritsugu Miyagawa

Nori’s grandfather was one of the Japanese settlers of Ogasawara who was displaced by the events of World War II.  The family moved north to Izuoshima where Nori was born and grew up playing in the ocean with homemade bodyboards. In the early 70’s he came to Ogasawara to establish a home for himself in the nearly uninhabited area known as Ogiura.  Upon a trip to the mainland he was introduced to the surf culture in Shonan at 23 years old. From there he began to discover various surf points in Ogasawara and continued to visit the mainland to improve his surfing.  He opened the island’s only surf shop, RAO, and as more surfers came to the island he gradually built a surfing community in Ogasawara. As he spent time guiding visiting surfers around the island, he was fortunate to meet the owner of the Hawaiian Island Classic surf company for which he became a rider. His experience in Hawaii helped to guide the surfing culture in Ogasawara. His discourse on life as a surfer and the process of gathering the necessary elements to build a community of young people is at the heart of Born in Surf.

宮川典継

「ノリさん」の祖父は硫黄島の島民であったが、大戦時代に強制疎開させられた。彼らは伊豆大島へと移り住み、ノリさんはそこで生まれた。幼少の頃から伊豆大島の海でボディサーフィンなどを始め、そこで波に乗る楽しさを覚えたと彼は語る。70年代前半の頃に彼の家族は父島へと渡り、当時まだ人がほとんどいなかった扇浦地区に住むこととなった。23歳の時に内地を訪れた際、湘南のサーフィン文化を彼は体感する。その後、小笠原で様々なサーフポイントを発見しながら内地でも波乗りをするために足を運び、自分を進化させていった。やがて小笠原で唯一のサーフショップRAOを開き、多くのサーファーが小笠原に訪れるとサーフィンコミュニティーが築かれ始めた。そして島に来るサーファー達を紹介しているうちにハワイアン・アイランド・クラシックのオーナーに出会うことになる。これによって得ることのできたハワイ等、外国での経験が小笠原のサーフィン文化を作るための大きな助けとなった。ノリさんのサーファーとして、そして人として人生を生きるために必要な心構えや、若い世代が主体のコミュニティーを築くための信念はBorn in Surfの中心的なテーマでもある。

Ryo Shimizu

Hooked on surfing, Ryo realized he had to live near the ocean. This moment led him to Ogasawara where he built his own home and guest house in Coffee Mountain overlooking yakiba beach. Pelan Village is a WWOOFing location and a state of mind, founded with the goal to live a lifestyle that will preserve the earth for the next 7 generations.  Ryo believes this is possible by changing the things that anyone, anywhere, and anytime are capable of doing.  The water saving process and lifestyle at Pelan certainly inspire the visitor to think more deeply and creatively about the resources we consume.  Ryo is also a kayaking tour guide and a founding member of Ogasawara’s Kaname Kai–a club that organizes an annual outrigger canoe race and other events focused on getting everyone involved with the ocean.  A passionate member of the Ogasawara community, Shimizu-san is constantly working to create opportunities for everyone.

清水良一

サーフィンにハマったリョウさんはすぐに海の近くに住むことを決意した。そして彼は小笠原へと移り住み、ヤキバ海岸が望めるコーヒー山に自分の家とゲストハウスを建てた。プーラン村のコンセプトは7世代後にまで続く美しい地球作りを実現するライフスタイルを築くことで、国内と海外からWWOOFerも受け入れている。リョウさんによると彼の実践していることは誰でも、どこでも、いつでも実行できることである。プーラン村独自の水の節約システムやライフスタイルは間違いなく訪れる人達の資源に対する考え方に刺激を与える。リョウさんはカヤックツアーのガイドもこなし、小笠原の要会の創設メンバーの一人でもある。要会は毎年恒例のアウトリガー大会をはじめ、人と海を繋ぐ様々な行事を企画運営する。情熱溢れるリョウさんは常に小笠原のコミュニティーのことを考え、行動を起こす人である。

Yuichi (Chappy) Ishii

Chappy grew up surfing during Japan’s surfing boom in the 1980’s. Determined to find a lifestyle in which he could focus on surfing, he found a part-time job in Ogasawara. He then met Nori-san and began to work for Surf Shop Rao, helping with the dolphin swimming tours. He now runs his own dolphin swim tour service known as C-trip. Occasionally he uses his boat to take surfers to remote and offshore points. A talented surfer and lover of big waves, Chappy Shares stories of Ogasawara’s surf points that are rarely surfed, challenging the younger generation of surfers to elevate their surfing and explore the more remote areas of Ogasawara.

石井（チャッピー）裕一

チャッピーは80年代のサーフィンブームの中で波乗りを始めた。その後、気候が暖かくてサーフィンに集中できる場所探し求め、小笠原を知る。そこでRAOに勤め、ドルフィンスイミングツアーの手伝いを始めた。現在はC-Tripという自身のドルフィンツアーを経営している。ビッグウェーブをこよなく愛し、ときには島のサーファーを連れ、船で沖のポイントへ繰り出す。彼は小笠原の中でも人があまり訪れないサーフスポットをよく知り、それらの話や経験は若いサーファー世代の波乗りに対する情熱を掻き立てる。

Tetsuya Nakamura

Tetsuya fell in love with the dolphins on RAO’s dolphin swim tours. Ogasawara also offered a lifestyle that was more desirable than the busy life he was living during Japan’s economic bubble of the 80’s.  He made the decision to move to Chichijima and started his own restaurant and accommodation in the secluded kominato area. Tetsuya Healing Guest House brings an exceptional level of cuisine to Ogasawara and a peaceful place for visitors to stay. Tetsuya relates how the experience of swimming with dolphins closely resembles the experience of surfing and explains how surfing for him is no longer an extreme sport, but a way to connect with nature.

中村徹也

元々RAOのドルフィンツアーの常連であった徹也は小笠原のイルカと生活に憧れ、父島への移住を決意。彼が小笠原へと移り住んだ80年代はバブルの真っ最中で、都会の目まぐるしい生活とは正反対のライフスタイルが小笠原にはあった。現在はくつろぎの宿てつやのオーナー兼シェフである。島の中心街から離れた小港にあるこの静かな宿で訪れる人に貴重な経験を提供し、最高級の料理で人々をもてなし続けている。徹也はイルカと泳ぐ時の感覚がサーフィンと通じるものがあると語り、波乗りが競争するためのスポーツというよりは自然との繋がりを感じるための手段であると考えている。

Nobu Takahashi

Nobu moved to the island with his family in his final year of middle school, but returned to Tokyo for high school as is common with some island students.  After graduating high school he began to work long hours at a butchery.  Watching the surfers drive to the beach while he delivered meat spurred him to move back to the island where he now works in the mountains and as a bartender at night. The champion of the 2015 Ogasawara Surfing Show, Nobu’s surfing continues to evolve.

高橋ノブ

ノブは中学三年の時に家族と小笠原に移住、しかし高校に入ると東京に戻った。卒業後、働き始めるが長い労働時間により波乗りの時間が減り、やがて小笠原に帰ってきた。現在は日中に山の仕事をこなし、夜はバーテンダーの顔を持つ。2015小笠原新春サーフィンショーのチャンピオンであるノブは自身の波乗りを進化させ続けている。
